The Most Popular Wedding Themes and Colors for 2017-2019

If you’re just starting to plan your wedding, you might be curious about what is the most popular theme or color for weddings right now. Whether you want ideas to inspire what you do, or you want to know so that you can do something different, We’ve come up with this article for you! Some of my discoveries might surprise you–For we know a few of them surprised us!

We asked over 200 engaged men and women getting married between 2017 and 2019. Here is what I found out:

Most popular themes:

  1. No Theme at all!:

Themed weddings seem to be all the rage right now. Still, by far the most popular theme we found was NO THEME at all! Whether you have strictly decided not to have a theme, or you just have no idea if you really have a theme in mind, that is totally okay, and apparently more popular than you might realize! If that’s the case with you as well, that is totally okay!

2. Rustic Theme:

Rustic has been a ‘HUGE’ theme for a few years now, so it comes as no surprise that this takes second place. Think mason jars, naked cakes, burlap and lace. We really thought this would be the number one theme and were surprised to see it come in second! This is one of those themes that is probably here to stay for a while longer, whether you love it or hate it.

3. Disney Theme:

If you haven’t been paying attention lately, you may not have realized that Disney is a ‘HUGE’ wedding theme right now! We are seeing everything from Cinderella, to Ariel, to Frozen, and more. However, the most popular among Disney themes right now is Beauty and the Beast. We have, in fact, already had two Real Weddings featured on the blog that had Beauty and the Beast themed weddings. The first was a red and gold color story, the other a softer blush and gold. It’s amazing how different, yet similar, this theme can be depending on the color story you choose!

Runner-Up Themes:

3. Vintage Theme:

Vintage is one of those themes that can really go any way, depending on your interpretation of it. Generally it seems when people say “vintage” as a wedding theme they tend to mean vintage like Grandma’s old doilies and antique furniture. This is one of those themes that is often interchangeable with rustic. However, there are also those who say “vintage” and mean a more “rat pack” or 50’s type of vibe as well. This theme is very different to different people.

4. Gatsby Theme:

Gatsby. Glamorous. 1920’s. Flapper. Vintage. Roaring 20’s. These are all common names for this theme. This one is our personal favorite, a perfect theme for december wedding, hands down! Pearls, sequins and feathers! This theme has such a glamorous, glitzy vibe, it’s hard not to love it

Most Popular Colors:

5. Silver:

This one actually COMPLETELY took me by surprise. I was so sure that GOLD would be way more popular than silver. When shopping for a wedding it’s so hard to find wedding stuff in silver–it’s ALL in gold! Yet somehow, gold didn’t even make our list. I’m not sure if that’s because people just forgot about that color or what, but silver was the number one color!

6. Royal Blue:

Royal Blue. Again, a relatively surprising color for one of the top chosen colors, don’t you think?! Bright, royal blue. This color can look absolutely amazing when done correctly for a wedding, however, it is a very vibrant color that can quickly become overwhelming if you do too much of it.

7. Purple:

Purple. From deep eggplant to bright purple and even lavender. Purple is a top choice for weddings these days. we personally adore the pops of eggplant in a wedding and we thought it is a great choice! Purple can be so classy and elegant if done correctly. But again, be careful when you start looking at ultra bright shades of this color, as it can become overwhelming just like royal blue.

8. Ivory:

Ivory. Personally, we don’t think there is any surprise here. White for weddings is becoming slightly outdated we think. Most everyone we talk to has some form of ivory in their wedding. Usually it’s the dress, but we love the trend I’ve seen of weddings that are almost completely ivory, from the dress to the cake and everything in between. This is a very elegant color choice.

9. Grey:

Especially used for grooms’ tuxedos nowadays, grey is quickly taking over the wedding world! More and more brides are opting for neutral colors such as gray, taupe, and browns for everything from the tuxes to the bridesmaids dresses and decor! Charcoal seems to be a little less common than a lighter, brighter grey. Oh, and if you choose grey for your tuxes, consider putting your groom in charcoal and your groomsmen in light grey, or vice versa! It’s a great way for your groom to stand out, but not super obvious!

10. Blush:

We were actually quite surprised that blush was not higher on the list! We feel SO many weddings these days incorporate blush in one way or another. It’s no wonder why, this color is simply gorgeous! Very romantic, but light and airy at the same time. If you’re thinking of using blush as one of your colors, consider mixing in some metallic rose gold as well!

11. Yellow:

Yellow. This actually really surprised us. Yellow?! We mean, sure, it’s a happy color and we don’t have anything against it, per se. But we weren’t expecting it to be a TOP color either. We do love the idea of a sunflower bouquet. We just didn’t think it was going to be THAT popular. The more I look at it though…you really can’t help but be happy looking at that color can you?! So, We guess it makes sense–what else would you want to be on your wedding day other than happy?

12. Navy:

Navy, a beautiful, mysterious color.  Navy suits for the men is such a beautiful idea, and slightly less common than black or grey it seems. The jewel tones of pretty much any shade, and we think navy would be absolutely awesome if mixed with other jewel tones like emerald or eggplant!
